The history of Beneteau France

For more than a 130 years Bénéteau has been building boats. It started as a modest shipyard that built sailing trawlers that were designed to withstand the harsh conditions of fishing in the Atlantic. From humble beginnings it has grown to be the largest leisure boat manufacturers in the world. Beneteau has an international network that stretches across 28 countries and employs has than 1500 employees or should I say sailors.
Key Dates:
1884: Benjamin Bénéteau founds his own shipyard and begins building wooden sail-based fishing boats.
1912: Bénéteau introduces the first motor-driven fishing boats.
1964: André Bénéteau and sister Annette Roux take over as head of the company and enter the fiberglass-based pleasure craft market.
1984: Bénéteau goes public on the Paris stock exchange.
1986: Bénéteau opens a new modern shipbuilding facility in France and establishes its first international facility, in South Carolina in the United States.
1992: The company acquires Construction Navale Bordeaux, a maker of aluminum-based fishing and service craft.
1995: The company acquires rival Jeanneau SA, doubling in size; the O’Hara Houses subsidiary is launched.
1997: The company acquires Wauquiez, a sailing yacht maker in France.
2001: The company acquired 57 percent of Ostroda, a maker of motor-driven boats in Poland.
2003: The company forms the Duboats joint venture with the Bin Zayed Group of United Arab Emirates to enter the Mideast market.

Company History:
Bénéteau SA is the world’s largest manufacturer of sailing yachts and pleasure craft, under the Bénéteau Yachts and Jeanneau names. Other well-known brand names in the Bénéteau stable include Waquiez, CNB (Construction Navales de Bordeaux), and catamaran maker Lagoon. Based in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez, in France’s Vendee region along the Atlantic coast, Bénéteau’s sales are worldwide, representing more than two-thirds of its annual revenues of EUR 619 million per year. The United States, the site of the company’s only international manufacturing facility, accounts for a significant share of Bénéteau’s shares. The company also owns a majority stake in Polish motor yacht builder Ostroda, and has entered the Duboats joint venture with the United Arab Republic’s Bin Zayed Group. In addition to its pleasure craft, Bénéteau also manufactures professional craft, including fishing boats and racing boats. A diversification drive undertaken during the lean years of the early 1990s has led Bénéteau Yachts into a number of related areas, including modular mobile homes, under the O’Hara brand, utilizing the company’s expertise at creating comfort within confined spaces; and, through subsidiary Microcar, lightweight license-free automobiles, using Bénéteau’s longstanding expertise in fiberglass manufacturing. Bénéteau Boats, listed on the Euronext Paris Stock Exchange, remains controlled at more than 57 percent by the founding Bénéteau family. Annette Roux, granddaughter of the company’s founder and chief architect of its success, remains company chairman, seconded by CEO and probable successor Bruno Cathelinais.
